As the car that invented the hot-hatch segment, the GTI continues to wave its plaid-cloth flag proudly. It comes in three- and five-door hatchback versions; the base engine is a 210-hp 2.0-liter direct-injected turbo four. A six-speed manual is standard, while VW’s six-speed DSG automatic is optional. For a bit more power, the Performance package adds an extra 10 hp, beefier brakes, and a torque-sensing limited-slip diff. We like the GTI enough to give it a 10Best award for 2016.
